Many of the world’s best artistic swimming athletes will be in Quebec City for the upcoming FINA World Series Event #7. The 2019 Canada Open will run from May 30 – June 1 at the Desjardins Aquatic Centre, located at Laval University’s PEPS. Training will take place from May 27-29.
Over 85 athletes from 13 countries will compete across ten different events: Solo Technical & Free; Duet Technical & Free; Mixed Duet Technical & Free; Team Technical & Free; Free Combination; and Team Highlight. It will conclude with an Exhibition Gala on Saturday evening, featuring entertaining routines from each country and invited athletes from the host artistic swimming club in a spectacular water show.
Fresh from winning six gold medals and one silver at the most recent FINA World Series event in China, Canada’s National Team will be taking part in the Team Technical, Team Free and Highlight Routine events. Team Canada’s scores have been steadily improving in World Series events as they continue to work toward this summer’s World Championships and Pan Am Games.
Jacqueline Simoneau and Claudia Holzner will team up to compete in the Duet Technical and Free events, while Halle Pratt and her partner Andrée-Anne Côté, who competed for the local Quebec City club for over 8 years, will take part in the Duet Technical event. The host country will also compete in the 10-member Combo event.
Simoneau, from St-Laurent, QC, and Pratt, from Calgary, AB, will also take part in the Solo Technical and Free events.
Team Canada will be joined by top international athletes in Quebec City, including the 2018 Canada Open Solo Champion Yukiko Inui, from Japan. Inui, who finished 4th in the world this event in 2017, is back to defend her solo title in the Technical and Free events. She will also team with Megumu Yoshida to defend the Duet Technical title they won last year in Surrey, B.C. Inui also won the Duet Free title with a different partner and will compete in that event in Quebec with Yoshida. She was 4th in the world in the Duet events at the 2017 FINA World Championships.
Returning to competition this year are 2016 Olympic silver medalists in Duet, Huang Xuechen and Sun Wenyan from China. Huang is the most decorated Chinese artistic swimmer ever and has won medals at three consecutive Olympic Games, 2008, 2012 and 2016. With Sun, she won silver at the 2015 FINA World Championships, and both are coming back to compete after more than two years away from the sport.
China is the reigning world silver medalist in the Team Technical and Free events. Both Sun and Huang will be a part of the strong Chinese team competing in Quebec City.
Being held in the same facility is the 2019 Canadian Masters Championships where over 260 athletes will compete. The 2019 Masters features competition for athletes in Solo, Duet, Mixed Duet, Team and Combo in age groups ranging from 19-29 to 70-79
Both events are hosted by Canada Artistic Swimming and the Québec Excellence Synchro club.
Tickets will be available each day of the event at the PEPS ticket office.
