The second leg of the 2025 Artistic Swimming World Cup got underway on Friday with the presentation of the Solo and Duet Technical events. Team Canada had 3 entries on the day, including two in the afternoon session where the Duet Technical program was presented under difficult windy conditions in the exterior Soma Bay sports complex.
Audrey Lamothe and Ximena Ortiz Montano, swimming together in competition for just the second time, delivered a strong performance, achieving their full difficulty for a score of 256.2900, good for third place and the bronze medal in the 29 competitor field.
“Our biggest goal was to swim a routine without any deductions. We didn’t really have a medal objective since we’re still in the early stages as a pair. We weren’t expecting to win a medal, but of course we were really happy to find ourselves on the podium!” shared Audrey Lamothe in an interview with Sportcom.
“Since the World Cup in Paris, we’ve increased the level of difficulty in our routine to better highlight our strengths. We’ve worked really hard in training to improve the execution of our technical elements to get better execution scores. I think all that hard work really paid off today,” she added.
“We were nervous going in, and the conditions were an additional challenge,” added Ortiz Montano, “but we couldn’t be happier with a bronze medal!”
Calgary’s Georgia Hock and Emma McIlwain also had a strong showing in the duet technical session, achieving full difficulty and a score of 240.9717, bettering their score from the Paris World Cup in March. They finished in 12th place in the event won by Neutral Athletes Mayya Doroshko and Tatiana Gayday with 268,0551, followed by Ukrainians Daria Moshynska and Anastasiia Shmonina (261.6125).
In the morning session, Audrey Lamothe placed fifth in the solo technical event.
“The conditions were difficult this morning as well,” said Lamothe. “I tried to fight the wind to avoid travelling too much and overall I’m very happy with my routine and how I was able to adapt to the changing conditions.”
Team Canada will be back in action this evening in Soma Bay for the Team Technical event, where it will unveil its brand new technical routine.
