Gabrielle Boisvert wins gold in Technical Solo event at 2014 Canadian Open Championships

Saskatoon, May 1, 2014 – Gabrielle Boisvert of SynchroÉlite in Québec City offered a strong performance by taking top spot in the tech solo event to open the Canadian Open synchronized swimming Championships being held in Saskatoon this week.

Boisvert tabulated 76.3413 points with Elizabeth Savard of Dollard Synchro in Montreal second at 75.0171 and Olivia Zawaduk of the BC Aquasonics third at 74.4190.

After coming in second at the National Qualifier in Montreal last March, Boisvert came to Saskatoon with gold in mind. “Since it was a technical event, I mainly focused on my technical elements but showing emotion has always been a key for me”, says Boisvert, who has been involved in synchronized swimming for 14 years. “I was able to block out the crowd and the judges to really concentrate on my routine. I’m obviously thrilled with the result, but I’m especially satisfied with the quality of my performance.”

In the junior solo preliminaries, Clare McGovern, the defending national champion from Granite Synchro in Toronto, posted the top score just ahead of Kali Wong from the Calgary Aquabelles. The finals, featuring the top ten swimmers from the preliminary round, takes place Thursday.

Junior Figures results

In the junior figures event held on Wednesday, Clare McGovern of Granite posted the best score with 76.868, Claire Caskey, also of Granite Synchro, was second with 74.780 and Erica Slavin of the Calgary Aquabelles was third at 74.685.

Competition continues through to Saturday.
