Hughes and Kedwell win 11-12 duet event at 2015 Canadian Espoir Championships

Saint John, June 4, 2015 — Caroline Hughes and Sophia Kedwell, representing Toronto’s Granite Synchro Club, won the Canadian Espoir Championships’s 11-12 Duet event today at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre.

The young pair posted a score 64.8231, a little more than a point over teammates Rachel Blainey and Charlotte Gray who placed second with 63.7918. Bailey Hargreaves and Hannah Kryworuckho, from the Saskatoon Aqualenes, captured bronze with 62.6149.

Earlier in the day, Montreal Synchro’s Rosalie Boissonneault ranked first with 67.6050 points in the 11-12 figures event. Meaghan Lapierre of Gloucester Synchro was second at 66.0320 and Marissa Enns of Olympium Synchro third at 65.7200.

13-15 Events

In 13-15 team preliminaries, the Calgary Aquabelles picked up where they left off at the National Qualifier event last March by coming first with a score of 73.3076. Teams from Aretaic Alliance and Montreal Synchro are on their heels in the second and third positions with scores of 71.9232 and 69.3020. The winner will crowned at the very end of the competition on Saturday evening.

In the 13-15 solo preliminaries, Paige Hopper of the Calgary Aquabelles stands first with 75.5038 points, Emily Armstrong of Toronto’s Aretaic Alliance is second at 73.7914 and Cassandra Winkelaar, also of the Aquabelles, third at 73.0069. The final is on Friday.

All events from the Championships will be webcast live, exclusively on Bell Aliant Community One.

Over 250 synchronized swimmers from 30 clubs and 9 Canadian provinces are in Saint John to compete in the 2015 Canadian Espoir Synchronized Swimming Championships, along with over 80 coaches and 30 officials. The competition continues through to Saturday, June 6.
