ALEXANDROPOULI, Greece, September 7, 2014 – Canada finished fifth in the team event on Sunday at the Mediterranean Cup synchronized swimming competition. Canada was represented by its 13-15 national team.
Russia won the gold medal with 159.9411 points, Spain was second at 152.9491 and Italy third at 150.2758. Canada, whose figures results were the fourth best in the field, earned 149.3769, less than a point away from a bronze medal.
The Canadian swimmers were Emily Armstrong of Toronto, Thegyn Gurney of Scarborough, Paige Hopper of Calgary, Laurence Levasseur of Quebec City, Sion Ormond of Aurora, ON, Meaghan Ozikizler of Toronto, Halle Pratt of Calgary and Cassandra Winkelaar of Edmonton. The alternates were Sabrina Barnes of Guelph, Amy Parker of Edmonton and Joelle Zavitz of Guelph.
“We had nothing but pride for this group when they finished”, mentioned assistant-coach Jennifer Koptie. “After an incredible camp, this fantastic team finished with a bang.”
In the solo final, Veronika Kalinina of Russia won the gold medal, Julia Echeberria of Spain was second and Anna-Maria Taxopoulou of Greece third, barely edging Canada’s Halle Pratt who came in fourth by an extremely slim 0.16 point margin.
