FINA World Cup 2014_ Team HighlightsQuebec City, October 5, 2014 – On the last day of competition at the 13th FINA Synchronised Swimming World Cup, Team Canada finished on a positive note by winning a silver medal in the all-new Highlight Team event. Canada was awarded its highest mark of the competition (90.000) for its Aliens-themed routine, coming second to Ukraine who received 93.1333.

First introduced at the 2009 World Trophy and presented for the first time in a World Cup this year in Quebec City, the Highlight Team event is the newest event in synchronized swimming.  Extremely spectacular, it features intricate patterns and figures as well as jaw-dropping highlights made possible by the addition of 2 extra athletes, creating 10-member teams.

“It’s a fun program. It’s very short and very new, but it features Canada’s strength: its highlights”, mentioned team captain Marie-Lou Morin. “There’s so much energy in this routine, we love to swim it.”

Canada thus finished its World Cup with a silver medal and 2 fourth positions in duet and team.

Incredible visibility for Synchronized Swimming

The four days of competition at Université Laval’s PEPS were testament to the sport’s good standings in the hearts of Canadians.  The very supportive and noisy sold-out crowds of Saturday and Sunday created priceless memories for the Canadian athletes performing in the pool.  “There is no words to express the energy we received from our fans this week”, said 2012 Olympian Karine Thomas.

“With the 2014 World Masters that were held in Montreal last June. the World Cup in Quebec City and the 2015 Pan Am Games coming to Toronto next summer, synchronized swimming will benefit from increased visibility”, mentioned Organizing Committee Chair Mario Welsh. “Hopefully, we will have convinced many young girls to go out and give our wonderful sport a try.”
